In Case You Missed It…
Last week, the largest Bitcoin conference, Bitcoin 2022, took place in Miami. Many of the top Bitcoiners attended giving their keynote speeches, but Jack Mallers’ presentation really caught our eye. Jack Mallers, the CEO of Strike (which assisted El Salvador to make Bitcoin legal tender), keynote presentation focused on the history of banking cards and the lack of innovation, until now. He announced Strike‘s partnership with Shopify, Wal-Mart, Chipotle and many other major corporations, eliminating credit card fees for merchants while allowing customers to pay with Bitcoin, which merchants can keep as Bitcoin or immediately convert to fiat currency. This innovation could propel major corporations to have Bitcoin on their balance sheet. Here is the full presentation:
Bitcoin ETFs have been newsworthy over the past year. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has now approved several Bitcoin Futures ETFs, but not a Spot Bitcoin ETF. The difference in these two ETFs is the purchase of Futures contracts vs. the actual purchase of Bitcoin for fund managers and family offices for their high net-worth clients.
Michael Sonnenshein, the CEO of Grayscale, which is the world’s largest digital asset fund, submitted a proposal to the SEC which would convert their GBTC assets to a Spot Bitcoin ETF. Sonnenshein was even bold enough to say Grayscale would sue the SEC if their Spot ETF was not approved. Here is a fascinating thread from Sonnenshein explaining ETFs and the progress of their ETF submission:
