Leader - Carol Tomé
UPS announced on March 18, 2020 in a press release that board member Carol Tomé would step in as the new CEO of UPS beginning in June, 2020. If there was a year to choose to step in as CEO of a global logistics company, 2020 would not make the list. However, Tomé’s history as CFO of The Home Depot for 18 years brought in serious leadership. In fact, she came out of retirement to become CEO of UPS.
In 2020, UPS found themselves in a unique situation as both a stay-at-home and back-to-work company. UPS stepped up dramatically to partner even closer with Amazon to assist with consumer and enterprise shipping. UPS landed government contracts early during “Operation Warp Speed” and revamped their fleet and built new warehouses to store and distribute vaccines. With this addition, the company created a new and lucrative stream of revenue delivering medical supplies.
UPS’ share price has more than doubled since last March and earnings reports have absolutely crushed analyst expectations every quarter since Tomé took the reigns. In addition, she’s leading UPS into the future with alternative-fuel fleet vehicles and implementing the use of alternative energy at distribution warehouses.
