CES returned to an in-person event this year showcasing the latest in future technologies over the past week. Unfortunately, the technologies being shown off in-person were limited as a number of high profile companies and brands (Meta, Microsoft, Twitter) pulled out from the event last minute due to Covid-19. Even worse, the blockchain technology and cryptocurrency universe was HIGHLY underrepresented and when there was representation involved, it was poor.
Let us explain: Start with the session titled “Decrypting Crypto.” On paper, it sounds great and when the room is filled with 200+ attendees (of which 50% raised their hands to not owning any crypto), you have an opportunity.
Except the panel was a complete miss: uncomfortable at best and unhinged at worst with the moderator, Michael Terpin, talking a majority of the time about the investment gains he personally made in a number of investments, bypassing a focus on educating an audience, and completely forgoing the idea of engaging the panelists in a group conversation.
Or was it the booth showcasing NFTs with the word written on paper? Let us simply say this isn’t the way and we can do better.
Finally, your look at the “Metaverse” at the event in 2022. Yeah, no.
CES in 2022 was an opportunity missed, if you ask us. We showed up in real life (IRL) to see what the world is being shown. And what we noticed was future technology being exhibited with little indication that cryptocurrency and blockchain is here. Yes, it’s early, but we expect more from industry leaders and community members on a global stage. Blame it on Covid and the uncertainties of the world right now and let’s aim higher in 2023. CES offers a chance to properly showcase and embrace web3. Here’s to hoping it’s an opportunity made next time.
